Qianlong-Style Famille Rose Green-Ground Yuhuchun Vase

This pear-shaped vessel, traditionally known as a yuhuchun, features a flared mouth, a slender neck, and a teardrop body resting on a short foot. A contemporary edition, it references the dense floral decoration set against colored enamel grounds favored by the eighteenth-century Qianlong court.

Artisans paint the decoration in famille rose enamels over a high-fired Jingdezhen porcelain body. A pale turquoise-green enamel provides the ground for the opaque pink, yellow, blue-green, and iron-red details. These colored washes are fused to the glazed surface during a secondary, lower-temperature firing.

The painted composition combines scrolling floral patterns with auspicious motifs. The central body features stylized xifanlian floral scrolls, whose continuous structure is traditionally associated with growth and continuity. Interwoven among the flowers are flying iron-red bats. Because the word for bat shares the same pronunciation as "fortune" or "blessing" in Chinese, they visually convey wishes for blessings and good fortune. This decoration is anchored by classical borders: ruyi heads at the neck and lotus lappets around the base.
