A Small Vase for a Sprig of Green

Small red porcelain vase held in two hands, with leafy twigs rising above its white rim

A twig with a few leaves, a stem of grass, a little offcut from the garden: a small porcelain vase gives you somewhere to put them. You don't need to buy a bouquet or learn a style of flower arranging.

Choose something because you like the way it grows. Perhaps the stem bends to one side, or a dry seed head catches your eye. Try it on the desk where you work or beside your tea. At that distance, even a small leaf is worth looking at.

In the oxblood-red miniature vase pictured here, leafy twigs rise from a narrow white rim. One reaches higher than the other. The uneven growth is part of the pleasure; there is no need to trim them into a matching pair.

Use flowers when you have them, and leave the vase empty between stems. It can keep its place on the shelf until another little piece of greenery catches your attention.
