Maitreya sits above a broad bank of curling clouds, smiling openly, one hand lifting prayer beads while the other rests beside his cloth sack. The generous body, bare feet, and cascading robes give the figure a welcoming frontality; nothing about the pose feels remote.

In Chinese Buddhist visual culture, this laughing figure is Budai, the cloth-sack monk widely understood as an incarnation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the future. His image carries wishes for contentment, openhearted generosity, and blessings still to come. On a home altar or in the rooms where a family gathers, the figure offers a warm focal point for devotion, gratitude, and hopeful intention.

Dehua's white-porcelain kilns have long been associated with sculptural figures, using a pale body and glaze to let expression, robe folds, and modeled clouds emerge through light and shadow.
