Dehua Hand-Modeled Peony Porcelain Display Plate

Peonies do not sit flat on this Dehua porcelain plate. The blooms rise in sculptural layers from the glazed surface, their pale blush petals opening around coral-red centers while painted leaves and two butterflies keep the composition light.

The inscription reads Hua Kai Fu Gui, or "Prosperity in Bloom." In Chinese decorative culture, the peony is associated with prosperity, honor and a household in full flower. Here the familiar motif is made three-dimensional, allowing light to move across the petals rather than leaving the flower as a painted image alone.

Each peony is modeled by hand from Dehua porcelain clay and set against painted botanical linework. A fine gold-toned rim and black folding stand give the piece a finished presence on a console, cabinet, shelf or reception desk. At 26 cm across, it has enough scale to anchor a small arrangement without overwhelming it.
