Dehua Seated Amitabha Buddha Porcelain Sculpture

In Pure Land Buddhism, Amitabha is revered as the Buddha of Infinite Light, associated with compassionate guidance and the aspiration toward the Western Pure Land. This seated image gives those ideas a quiet place in daily life: on a home altar, in a meditation room, or in a study where stillness matters.

The figure sits cross-legged with both hands resting together in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. Downcast eyes, elongated earlobes, close curls, and the measured fall of the robe keep the composition calm from every angle. The gold-toned wan emblem at the chest is an ancient auspicious Buddhist symbol representing Buddhist teaching; it is unrelated to modern political use.

Dehua has a long history of ceramic devotional sculpture. The British Museum holds a Qing-period Dehua Amitabha figure and records that Dehua potters made religious figures for domestic altars as well as export. The present sculpture is a contemporary work, not an antique or a reproduction of that museum object. Its connection lies in the living Dehua practice of shaping devotional images for private spaces.

Six finishes change the character of the same form, from gloss white and pale celadon to coral, soft green, ochre, and warm gray. Three removable symbolic attributes - a miniature stupa, lotus, and small offering vessel - can be placed in the open hands, allowing the display to change without disturbing the meditative posture.
