Jingdezhen Hand-Painted San Duo Blue-and-White Porcelain Gaiwan Set
▪ BESPOKE ARCHIVAL PACKAGING WITH EVERY ACQUISITION
This Jingdezhen porcelain tea set includes a gaiwan, a tea boat, and a tasting cup, designed for a solitary tea session. The pieces feature the traditional "San Duo" (Three Abundances) motif—peach, pomegranate, and persimmon—painted by hand in underglaze cobalt.
Fired at high temperature, the cobalt pigment interacts with the glaze to create localized pooling and dark, metallic spots along the brushstrokes. This physical reaction echoes the "heaped and piled" effect associated with early blue-and-white porcelain, recording a kiln-born material effect rather than a printed surface.
The gaiwan is designed with a flared rim for controlled pouring and holds approximately 90ml (3.0 fl oz). The accompanying tea boat physically bounds the brewing space and manages water displacement, while the tasting cup completes the set. High-fired and unglazed at the foot ring, the clay body reveals subtle, naturally occurring iron spots.
