Pine holds its needles through winter, bamboo bends without breaking, and plum is among the first to flower in the cold. Painted together on this Jingdezhen Yuhuchun vase, the Three Friends of Winter turn a familiar blue-and-white composition into a statement of resilience, integrity, and steadfast companionship.
The contemporary Xuande-style form keeps the softened pear-shaped body, narrow neck, and gently flared mouth associated with the Yuhuchun silhouette. Pine establishes the main structure, while bamboo leaves and plum blossom move through the open white ground and give the painting a clear vertical rhythm.
The porcelain body is made in Jingdezhen from porcelain stone and kaolin. The cobalt decoration is painted by hand, covered with a clear glaze, and high-fired at approximately 1300°C. After firing, the blue sits beneath the glaze, with darker cobalt gathering along branches, leaves, and fine outlines.
The motif has long been valued in Chinese painting and decorative art because its meaning is carried by the plants themselves rather than by a written slogan. It makes the vase particularly suited to a study, a new home, or a gift between close friends, where the imagery can be understood as both painting and personal wish.
At 26 cm tall, the vase is made for close viewing rather than grand architectural display. It belongs naturally on a tea table, writing desk, cabinet, sideboard, or study shelf, where the curve of the body and the brushwork can be seen at close range.
