This medium-sized porcelain vessel features the classic meiping (plum vase) profile, characterized by a narrow mouth, broad shoulders, and a tapering body. A contemporary Ming-style edition, it draws on the vessel form and decorative traditions of Ming dynasty blue-and-white porcelain.

The piece is made from Jingdezhen high-white porcelain. Artisans paint the decoration in cobalt directly onto the unfired porcelain body. After the vase is covered with a transparent glaze and fired at temperatures exceeding 1300°C, the cobalt develops a deep, varied blue tone. Darker cobalt outlines define the scales and features of the Qilin, while lighter washes build the clouds and layered waves.

The central motif depicts an auspicious Qilin moving above rolling waves. The composition is framed by flaming clouds and a band of scrolling peonies at the shoulder. The rolling waves create a continuous lower register, while the peony scrolls add the familiar association of prosperity. At 26 centimeters high, its proportion is well-suited for display on a wide console, wooden cabinet, or deep bookshelf.
