Translucent White Porcelain Goldfish Meiping Vase

Its Chinese title, “At Ease,” suits the scene. Two long-finned goldfish cross the tall white field without a fixed axis, one near the shoulder and the other closer to the foot. The distance between them gives the Meiping silhouette room to breathe.

Raised gold-toned scales catch direct light while pale pink and blue fins soften into the porcelain ground. When the vase is backlit, the white body becomes gently luminous and the fish remain clearly legible rather than disappearing into the surface.

Goldfish carry associations of abundance and surplus in Chinese decorative culture, while the title At Ease gives the two drifting figures a more personal mood.
